Providence, Rhode Island was founded in 1636, is one of the oldest cities in the states, and currently serves as the capital of Rhode Island. The city is perched on the Providence River and on the beautiful seascape of Narragansett Bay. The founder of Providence, Roger Williams, declared the area to be in "God's merciful Providence," and the city was thus named.
Since its founding, the city has been home to various industries, reputable hospitals and medical centers, and some of the best colleges and universities in the United States. In 2009, it was declared the "Creative Capital."
